David has been practicing Judo for over 30 years and has been teaching Judo for 18 years. David has been coaching in local schools in Farnborough, Yateley, Sandhurst, Farnham, Ash, and as far out as Bordon and Dorking.

He is a 1st Dan Black belt and Level 2 BJA Club Coach. David also coaches the Advanced sessions at the famous Pinewood Judo Club and regularly travels and coaches at Tournaments around the UK and abroad. Before retiring from competitive Judo in 2003, he went on to become one of the best Judo fighters in Great Britain.

In his early teens training

at  Pinewood Judo Club, he

achieved 1st places at club

and county level tournaments

around the British Isles plus

gold medals fighting abroad

with Pinewood. In his late teens in 1996 he was selected for the Great Britain Squad and won his first Junior National Title in 1997.

He then moved into Senior Judo and followed on his winning streak by taking the Senior National title in 1999. David ended 1999 at the top of the Senior British Rankings at Under 60kgs.

He continued his Judo results into the new millennium but

unfortunately was only reserve for the Sydney 2000 Olympics

as only 1 place per weight per country is allocated and this

went to another British fighter due to his performance at the

World Championships.
Putting this disappointment aside he still had his best results to date in 2000 and 2001 with European and Olympic Qualifying points gained through Bronzes at the Belgium and British Grand Prix events and his best result ever at the highly respected Dutch Super Grand Prix tournament in Rotterdam with a 3rd place, only losing out to eventual winner Ruben Houkes, who then went on to become World Champion and Olympic Bronze medallist. These results pushed David's rankings into the top 20 in Europe. He then retired early due to ongoing injuries and to focus more on work and family commitments.

More recently David made a mini comeback in 2008 fighting in Masters (Veteran) events around the UK and abroad. He won the British Masters title at Under 66kgs and Bronze at the World Masters Championships in Brussels.

Now concentrating all his efforts on School Judo, he also runs very successful Judo Holiday Camps and Inter School Judo Tournaments throughout the year, whilst also training the elite fighters at Pinewood Judo Club.
Anyone wishing to start Judo in one of the schools he teaches at or would like to attend any of the Judo Camps can contact David on 07765 247960, by email davidjohnstonjudo@yahoo.co.uk or by using the contact page.
